  • End-to-end attenuation test

Attenuation is the measure of optical power loss in decibels. It is the main field-tested parameter in optical-fiber systems. In a system`s overall attenuation, cables, connectors, splices, and patch cords have their contributions. Tight bends or excessive forces placed on the cable during transportation and installation also induce the additional loss. 

This is a measure of the optical power loss between cable termination points. In your system design, you have a calculated link-loss budget. The end-to-end loss should always be less than the budget. Your network installer will measure each segment from the patch panel to detect that the cable meets the loss limit. Because of the stress and bending that cables can be subjected to during installation, you should measure the attenuation of each connectorized link after installation.

Attenuation is measured by comparing the difference in two optical power levels. At first, through this method how much light is put into the cable at the near end is measured. Then it measures how much light exits the far end after the cable system is inserted in between. A stabilized light source and optical power meter are used to measure the attenuation of each terminated fiber. Best results are achieved with factory-terminated test jumpers.

End-to-end attenuation testing of installed cable systems is performed using a three-step procedure known as the insertion-loss method. The steps are:

  1. Your network installer will start by connecting a short test jumper (containing the same fiber type as the system fiber) between the optical source and the optical power meter. Then he will record the reading as the reference power in decibels relative to milliwatts. This power level is the output power of the light source coupled into the jumper.

Although the output connector of the optical source can be different than the system connector type, the optical meter`s connector input must match the system. It is important, therefore, that the optical meter has interchangeable connector adapters.

  1. In the 2nd step, your installer by using an adapter will disconnect test jumper 1 at the power meter and insert test jumper 2. Later he will ensure that the power level is within the appropriate connector loss i.e. usually 0.5 dB of the reference reading. He will verify that the two test jumpers are not faulty. If this criterion is met, he will continue to Step 3. Otherwise, the installer will clean all connectors except the source connection point and repeat Step 2. If the loss is still greater than 0.5 dB, he will replace test jumper 2 and repeat Step 2.
  1. At the last phase, the installer will leave the two test jumpers attached to the optical source and optical power meter. Then he will disconnect the two jumpers at the adapter. Finally, he will attach the optical source/test jumper 1 to one end of the system fiber to be tested and the power meter/test jumper 2 to the other end of the same fiber. The power level is recorded in dBm and the loss in dB. He repeats this step for each fiber to be tested.

By the time, you understand that the total amount of loss between two endpoints can be measured through end-to-end attenuation testing. However, it is also important to know the causes of this loss and the points where it occurs in the cable system. To identify that, an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) is needed. An OTDR can detect fiber events and measure the losses due to cable, connectors, splices and other components. The graphical display of loss over a cable`s entire length provides the most revealing analysis and documentation available on a cable link which is commonly referred to as the link`s signature trace.

Since OTDR can provide detailed analysis of each installed components with access to only one end of the fiber, it is regarded as a versatile installation and troubleshooting tool which can be used for the purpose of cable acceptance, signature trace documentation, connector & splice loss determination and troubleshooting. 

 

Comparative analysis of the testing methods:

A single OTDR signature trace of each fiber provides a clear picture of the entire cable. Although attenuation testing confirms the end-to-end loss, OTDR analysis can document the integrity of the cable system, locate and measure each event or component, and uncover faults throughout the cable.

Guidelines to ensure accurate test results:

  1. Make sure the test jumpers for end-to-end attenuation testing or the test fiber box for OTDR testing are of the same fiber core size and connector type as the cable system;
  2. Ascertain that optical sources are stabilized and have center wavelengths within 20 nanometers of the 850/1300-nm multimode and 1310/1550-nm single-mode nominal wavelengths;
  1. Ensure the power meter is calibrated at each of the nominal test wavelengths and traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology calibration standard;
  1. Set the power meter end and the light source to the same wavelength;
  1. Clean all system connectors, adapters and jumpers prior to measurement.
